Child Development

Child development refers to the biological and psychological changes that occur in human beings between birth and the end of adolescence, as the individual progresses from dependency to increasing autonomy. Because these developmental changes may be strongly influenced by genetic factors and events during prenatal life, genetics and prenatal development are usually included as part of the study of child development.

Child development also refers to how a child becomes able to do more complex things as they get older. Development is different than growth. Working with children and their families is a highly rewarding career. Because parental demand for good early childhood programs is increasing, the need for qualified individuals with child development degrees is likely to rise as well.

A child development degree can help a person become a part of quality childcare programs or can assist the individual in the foundation of their own business. Child development degree prepares individuals for careers working with early elementary or preschool children. It helps teachers or other professionals to increase their qualifications and experiences to equip the child development career.

Child Care

Child care is a broad topic covering a wide spectrum of contexts, activities, social and cultural conventions, and institutions. Child care quality is affected by the training, skill and experience of providers; early childhood education and the quality of care have a deep impact on children's social development. Children who attend quality programs have better language and math skills as well as better classroom social and thinking skills from the preschool years into elementary school.

Child care workers generally are classified into three different groups based on where they work:

 - private household workers who care for children at the children's homes

 - family child care providers who care for children in the providers’ homes

- child care workers who work at child care centers, which include Head Start, Early Head Start, full-day and part-day preschool, and other early childhood programs.

Having a childcare certificate or college classes makes it easier to get better jobs. After getting work experience, some childcare workers can become supervisors or start their own daycare centers. Some become preschool teachers in public and private schools. To get these jobs, people often need a bachelor's degree, which usually takes 4 years of college.
